Among U.S. companies, it is safe to say, there has been one more biquitous than the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, none more familiar and - to those who worked in it and those it served - none more "permanent." And yet suddenly - on January 8, 1982 - AT&T announced that to settle a protracted and debilitating antitrust suit it had reached an agreement with the Justice Department calling for divestiture of upwards of two thirds of its assets.
