Carol's Closet

Anniversary: A Love Story
by Michael Adamse, Ph.D.

Richard's marriage is collapsing. After years of watching it deteriorate, he and his wife, Laura, have decided to call it quits. Though Richard can rationalize why this is the best decision - for himself, for the kids, even for Laura - he can't help but feel like a failure. His marriage just wasn't supposed to end like this.

When Richard picks up the ringing phone at 4:00 a.m., he feels a sense of dread. He hears his father's voice and knows before the words are spoken: his mother is dead. After the funeral, Richard stays on for a time to help his father adjust to a new routine. The night before Richard's return home, he tells his father about his failing relationship with Laura, hoping for some advice or words of wisdom his father gathered during his forty-nine years of marriage. Instead, his dad just listens. As Richard boards the plane back to Miami, however, his father hands him an envelope of letters: letters written by his parents to one another on their anniversaries.

So begins this tale of passion and hope. The letters take Richard on a journey of beauty and tragedy, joyful triumph and painful disappointment. As he explores his parents' life together, he is comforted and surprised, for he learns their marriage was much different than he perceived it. As you read the letters along with Richard, you, too, will discover their powerful effect and invaluable message: they reveal the secrets to a lifelong marriage of passion and excitement.
