Vedic Medicine
THE SAME PRIMORIDAL VIBRATIONS THAT GAVE RISE TO CREATION
EXIST IN THE VERY FABRIC OF HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY
by Dr. John Peterson and Vicki Peterson

Imagine entering a building designed to be 100 percent in accord with natural law so that you feel happier, healthier and clearer just being in it. Peaceful silence radiates from the center of the building, which contains a model of a Maharishi Vedic ObservatoryTM. Just looking at the curves and arches of the model awakens a deep connection in your heart with the cosmos. Half-heard whispers of ancient Gandharva Veda music and calming aromas fill the air, adding to the harmony you feel. You have an appointment with an Ayur-Vedic physician who takes your pulse and prescribes diet, herbs, aromas and cleansing programs designed to balance your physiology.
Within this building, designed according to the principles of Maharishi Staphathya Veda®, you enter a new paradigm for health care. The Maharishi Vedic Approach to HealthSM (MVAH) re-establishes balance between the body and its own inner intelligence through Vedic knowledge and its application.
What the ancients always knew, and some traditional cultures have never lost, science is just discovering: Our physiology responds to its orientation to the sun. Biologists have discovered recently that electrical activity in the thalamus changes according to the body's orientation. Proper building orientation is the realm of Staphathya Veda, a time-tested science which includes knowledge of proper site selection, building dimensions, placement of rooms according to purpose, and non-toxic construction.
Maharishi Staphathya Veda is one of the 40 aspects of MVAH. Based on Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's work in the field of consciousness, Dr. Tony Nader, M.D., Ph.D., has discovered that the different aspects of human physiology form an exact replica of the patterns of intelligence contained in the 40 aspects of the Veda and Vedic Literature. The same primordial vibrations that gave rise to creation exist in the very fabric of human physiology.
As an example of this, Jyotish (or Vedic astrology) links the planets with parts of the brain known as the basal ganglia. When you look at a cross-section of the brain, this correspondence is quite graphic. The largest and most central of the basal ganglia, the thalamus, corresponds with the sun; the hypothalamus with the moon; the red nucleas, or amygdala, with Mars; the subthalamus with Mercury; globus pallidus with Jupiter; substancia nigra with Venus; and the putamen with Saturn. The function of the planets in Jyotish corresponds with the function of these basal ganglia in the brain.
Maharishi calls the sun, moon, stars and galaxies the cosmic counterparts of the individual physiology. The sequential unfolding of DNA in physiology corresponds to the sequential evolution of the cosmos. Knowing any one point in the sequence, such as the time and place of birth, an expert can mathematically calculate forwards and backwards in time and offer valuable insight concerning tendencies in all areas of life.
Maharishi says that health depends on creating "Vastu shanti, graha shanti and manas shanti." This means that the vastu (building site) creates peace through its perfect orientation, that we are at peace with the cosmic counterparts (the planets or grahas), and that the mind is peaceful through the daily experience of pure consciousness.

The Maharishi Vedic Observatory is designed to expand awareness and train the mind to focus on the mathematical precision that regulates the universe.

The Transcendental Meditation® technique is the classic Vedic technique for settling the mind. It allows the attention to move naturally in the direction of bliss, until the knower, the known and the process of knowing are united in one unbounded ocean of pure consciousness. Regular TM® practice for 20 minutes twice a day can improve health, as substantiated by more than 600 scientific research studies published since 1971.
The November 1995 issue of the journal Hypertension reported on a study that found TM practice to be as effective in lowering blood pressure as hypertension drugs, with no side effects, and twice as effective as the control group's practice of progressive relaxation. The book Self-Recovery (Haworth Press, 1994), by Dr. David O'Connell and Dr. Charles Alexander, contains a meta-analysis of 198 studies of substance abuse programs. They found the TM program to be consistently three to four times as effective as other programs designed specifically for drug and alcohol treatment.
The 21st century needs a medicine based on complete knowledge of the whole human being. The limitations of materialistic medicine are increasingly obvious. The Journal of the American Medical Association reported last
November that over one-third of the American
population suffers from one or more chronic diseases, accounting for over two-thirds of total U.S. health expenditures.
A study published in American Journal of Managed Care in January 1997 found that faculty and staff at Maharishi University of Management who utilized MVAH programs were far healthier than matched controls at 18 other private Iowa colleges, including 92 percent fewer hospital admissions for cardiovascular disease. MVAH programs cut health care costs in half.
Our current health care system is rooted in acute episodic care. Our physicians train in acute care hospitals and our insurance companies pay for acute conditions. (Blue Cross/Blue Shield was established by a group of surgeons.) Increasing economic pressures on physicians through managed care depersonalizes the doctor/patient relationship: The average patient visit lasts only seven minutes; the average length of time a patient speaks before being interrupted by his physician is only 18 seconds. Clearly we need a more comprehensive and human approach to health.
Maharishi called 1996 the "Year of Awakening." It is the awakening of the Self, the Atma, of everyone to its infinite nature as Brahman, totality. As people wake up to their infinite nature, human suffering, which modern medicine is helpless to eradicate, will melt away.
